More than 40 years after arriving in Tucson, the computer giant IBM continues to produce innovations in data storage technology in its laboratories at the University of Arizona Science and Technology Park.

And Big Blue’s Tucson engineers also keep its customers’ data secure in the ever-changing and increasingly dangerous world of cyberspace.

An example is the recently deployed IBM Diamondback Tape Library, a high-capacity archival tape storage system designed for organizations that need to securely store hundreds of petabytes of data, each equivalent to more than 220,000 DVD movies.

IBM says the main benefits of its Diamondback include low power consumption and high-capacity storage at around a quarter of the spinning cost of hard drives.

But its timely selling point involves an inherent capability of removable tape media: disconnecting data from the Internet and private networks vulnerable to online attacks.

The ability to physically “isolate” data can help protect heavy users against ransomware – when a hacker blocks access to networks or data and demands a ransom to free it – and other cyber threats, IBM says. .

Calline Sanchez, IBM’s vice president of Tucson storage system development, said the company has worked with some of its “hyperscale” customers – companies like cloud computing services that store massive amounts of data – to help design the Diamondback.

“We decided to really work with our partners, our customers and our users and discuss what we want to do from an air gap or cyber resilience perspective,” said Sanchez, a former UA student who is also IBM’s state director for Arizona and her New Mexico native.

With data breaches and ransomware attacks now a constant threat, IBM says it’s seeing its big data customers increasingly turn to tape for data resiliency.

“From an air gap perspective, it detaches somewhat from the actual core infrastructure of a data center, so it’s self-contained,” Sanchez said. “It’s really this idea of ​​storing durable blocks of data, where it’s not at all easily accessible, from the outside world.”

While tape data storage was considered a declining technology years ago as faster hard drives and solid-state “flash” storage advanced, tape sales surged amid the seemingly endless data growth.

Sales of tape media for so-called “Open Linear Stripor LTO Ultrium – an industry-standard tape technology provided by a consortium of IBM, Hewlett Packard and Quantum Corp., grew by a record 40% in 2021 to 148 exabytes of capacity (one exabyte equals about 1000 petabytes, or one billion gigabytes), according to the Silicon Valley-based LTO program.

LTO tape is arguably the cheapest and easiest way to recover from ransomware attacks, said Phil Goodwin, vice president of research at computer research firm IDC.

“Ransomware and malware are threats that won’t go away,” Goodwin said as part of the LTO program’s sales report. “Magnetic stripe is an established, understood and proven technology that can be an invaluable tool in defeating ransomware.”

Sanchez attributes the tape’s resurgence to its durability and power efficiency, as well as its ability to protect against cyber threats.

“It’s cheaper than other types of storage media like floppy disks or hard drives, as well as flash drives,” she said. “And that’s part of the reason why tape now primarily powers the back-end infrastructure of cloud environments.”

Technology Park Crucible

Like most of IBM’s data storage systems developed over the past four decades, the Diamondback was developed on the company’s multi-building campus at UA Tech Park on South Rita Road.

IBM built what is now UA Tech Park in the early 1980s to house storage system development and manufacturing facilities that employed some 5,000 people in 10 initial buildings comprising more than 1.3 million square feet .

As part of a major restructuring in 1988, IBM moved the manufacturing portion of the operation and nearly 3,000 jobs to San Jose, California, but maintained its storage research and development units.

The company sold its sprawling campus on South Rita Road to UA in 1994, but remained as a tenant.

Today, its storage development labs are still functioning well, with approximately 1,000 workers spread over more than 600,000 square feet in four buildings.

IBM’s local operation — which last week received the Major Innovator of the Year award at the Governor’s Innovation Awards ceremony — generates more than 400 patents a year, Sanchez said.

At the Tech Park, IBM develops and tests a range of storage systems and media, including disk, tape and flash systems.

Inside the Tech Park Building 9032 Reliability Test Lab, IBM engineers performed final tests on the all-new Diamondback tape library systems, which are about the size of a cramped refrigerator. , with rows of shelves holding palm-sized tape cartridges.

With a constant hum of clicks and roars, a robotic shuttle moves back and forth inside the Diamondback cabinet, ripping and mounting barcoded tape cartridges according to a preset schedule.

Each cartridge can hold 18 terabytes, or 1,000 gigabytes of data, and a full Diamondback contains 1,548 LTO cartridges, for a total storage of 27 petabytes that can be operational within 30 minutes of delivery, said Shawn Nave, an engineer in mechanics from IBM who helped develop the Diamondback.

A row of Diamondbacks was being tested last week, and like all lab-tested products, they will be put through their paces.

“As part of these tests, we run it until the wheels drop and see what happens,” said Nave, one of several UA alumni from IBM’s local operation.

A nearby building houses labs that subject IBM hardware to extreme temperatures and other environmental challenges, Sanchez noted.

Hyperscale data centers — the huge, business-critical facilities that support robust, scalable applications and the operational backbones of big data-producing companies like Google, Amazon, Facebook, IBM, and Microsoft — consume a lot of energy and expend a considerable amount of greenhouse gases.

According to the International Energy Agency (OUCH), global data center electricity consumption in 2021 was 220-320 TWh, or about 0.9-1.3% of global final electricity demand. This excludes energy used for cryptocurrency mining, which was 100-140 TWh in 2021.

And in terms of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the data centers and data transmission networks that underpin digitalization accounted for around 300 Mt CO2-eq (i.e. the equivalent of 300 million metric tons of carbon dioxide) in 2020, including embodied emissions, i.e. the equivalent of 0.9% of GHG emissions related to energy and 0.6% of total GHG emissions.

Data centers around the world are constantly striving to improve their energy efficiency not only to reduce their GHG emissions, but also to meet their environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals. Large companies like Google that own large-scale data centers are realizing that to run entirely on carbon-free power 24/7, they need to do more than just buy renewable energy credits ( CER) to match fossil fuel electricity consumption.

In other words, they must match every byte consumed with carbon-free energy produced in real time. To do this, it is necessary to convert data centers into grid-interactive data centers equipped with state-of-the-art battery energy storage solutions and specialized software that will help them dynamically consume as much power as they need it from the network and back power to the network when the data centers no longer need it.

Hyperscale data center batteries decarbonize the network

In July, Microsoft announcement the addition of lithium-ion battery banks at a Microsoft data center in Dublin. These batteries, which typically provide backup power for the data center in an emergency, have been certified, tested and approved for grid connection to help network operators provide uninterrupted service when demand exceeds supply generated elsewhere on the grid by wind, solar and other sources.

Through a collaboration with Eaton, they added digital capabilities to the UPS, or uninterruptible power supply, allowing it to be used as a distributed energy resource (DER) to support networks with high levels of production variable renewable energy. “A grid-interactive data center is a data center where its extensive electrical system operates not only to protect customer data and computer applications, but also to provide valuable electrical services to the transmission system operator and to the network. These ancillary services will be increasingly essential to help networks cope with high levels of variable renewable energy,” said Sean James, director of data center research at Microsoft.

Microsoft is exploring opportunities to provide network stabilization services with network-interactive UPS technology in its data centers around the world to further accelerate progress toward network decarbonization.

Google, another hyperscale data center owner, announcement the installation of the first-ever lithium-ion battery-based system to replace diesel generators in a large-scale data center in Belgium. In the event of a power outage, the system allows Google users to continue their searches, emails and videos, without the pollution associated with burning diesel.

But batteries will also help balance other kinds of variability on power grids, enabling more cost-effective and efficient operations. The 2.75 MW installation of Fluence’s Gridstack energy storage product at the St. Ghislain data center serves as a proof of concept for wider use of lithium-ion battery-based energy storage in Google facilities to help Google meet its commitment to operate globally on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030.

Centrica will connect the battery storage assets to the Belgian power grid, allowing Google’s on-site batteries to flexibly store and discharge power using Centrica’s specialized FlexPond software. The project further demonstrates the role these industrial consumers can play in stabilizing power grids via on-site batteries.

Lithium-Ion UPS Batteries for Data Centers

To keep data centers working as expected during a network outage or power quality issues, uninterruptible power supplies are used along with rectifiers, inverters, and batteries. Historically, valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries have long been the UPS choice, but due to improvements in lithium-ion battery technology, prices, and sizes, major data center players have began to turn to the latter.

Typically, an inverter lithium-ion battery system will take up 50-80% less floor space and weigh 60-80% less than a comparable lead-acid system. Therefore, the growing demand for lithium-ion UPS battery backup solutions in data centers has led battery manufacturers to develop lithium-ion battery products that are fully compatible with UPS. Here are two examples:

  1. Saft: Its Flex’ion battery systems offer a wide range of energy and power combinations, from 50 kW to 4.2 MW and from 4 to 325 kWh. They are designed for AC and DC UPS, standby auxiliary and switchgear applications in data centers. Saft says its new system has many performance and lifespan advantages over VRLA lead-acid batteries being three times more compact, six times lighter and with 10 times longer life.
  2. eaton: The 9PX lithium-ion UPS is a backup battery module that has ratings ranging from 1.5 to 3 kVA, with low and high voltage options and offers up to four optional external battery modules for backup additional. The 9PX lithium-ion inverter, available in rack-mount and tower form, has the same reliable features as the lead-acid inverter.

PC accessories maker Akasa has launched a new desktop storage station aimed at making data transfers and cloning M.2 SSDs as easy as possible.

The DuoDock MX(Opens in a new window) ((AK-DK09U3-WH) contains two M.2 drive slots with support for PCIe Gen 4, Gen 3, and Gen 2 drives. It enables fast data transfers (up to 10Gbps) across using a USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection to a PC Alternatively, this is a very convenient plug-and-play method for cloning an M.2 SSD: just insert two drives and press the dedicated clone button on the front (no PC needed).

A cover can be attached to protect inserted discs during data transfers. Akasa has also included a built-in fan to deal with the heat that M.2 drives can produce during heavy data transfers at high speeds for an extended period of time.
