Mary Kay Inc., a global advocate for corporate social responsibility, today released its sustainability strategy Enriching Lives Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow and its 2020-2021 Strategic Summary Report on Sustainability and Social Impact .

It paints a picture of what “looks like” good for Mary Kay, independent beauty consultants, clients and, most importantly, the planet. Enriching Lives Today for a Sustainable Future was developed with key stakeholders in Mary Kay and is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, making Mary Kay a key part of a global coalition to secure a future better.

Mary Kay announces its Global Sustainable Development Strategy: Enriching Lives Today for a Sustainable Future. Our holistic approach encompasses three pillars of sustainability – economic, environmental and social – through five pillars, activated by 15 commitments to deliver a decade of sustainable action.

Mary Kay will contribute to 15 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations and has undertaken its priorities and commitments within the context of key global mandates, including: the ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact, the seven principles of Empowerment of Women Principles, the CEO Water Mandate and the Sustainable Ocean Principles.

Key commitment targets to be achieved by 2030:

Reduce by 30%: plastic intensity, carbon (Scopes 1 and 2) and water use.

Empower 5 million women around the world through the development of entrepreneurial skills.

Provide support to more than 10 million survivors of gender-based and domestic violence around the world.

In 2020 and the first half of 2021, Mary Kay continued to build on her legacy of sustainability and advocacy. Below are some of the notable highlights.

Business excellence

100% of managers based in the US and above have completed mandatory training on unconscious bias.

Gender diversity in the workplace: 54% of Mary Kay’s global leadership team are women; 61% of Mary Kay’s global workforce are women; and 54% of global vice presidents and above are women; 59% of directors and more are women (March 2021).

Completed a third-party audit activity and diversity data report to inform our current supply chain involving women-owned, minority-owned or veteran-owned businesses: As of February 2021 (data from (U.S. sourcing only): 12% of Mary Kay’s indirect vendors are Women, Minorities, or Veteran Ownership; 5% of Mary Kay’s direct suppliers are women, minorities or veterans.

In our global product portfolio, we currently offer more than 80 different foundations, in a wide range of shades and finishes, to best match the magnificent spectrum of diversity of skin tones.

77% of the artists contributing to our global marketing campaigns were from women-owned businesses (photographers, directors, designers, makeup artists, hairdressers, producers, etc.).

Product management

Becomes a member of the Sustainable Packaging Initiative for Cosmetics (SPICE). SPICE’s mission is to drive the future of sustainable packaging for cosmetics in order to achieve significant progress in three key areas: guiding sustainable packaging policy, driving packaging innovation and ensuring consumer transparency. .

Joined the Ellen MacArthur Foundation as part of its network, as part of its commitment to become a more sustainable circular business.

Responsible manufacturing

Mary Kay’s Global Headquarters, Global Manufacturing Plant, and Global Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS), all located in Texas, USA, are 100% powered by energy renewable.

A detailed benchmark analysis was initiated in 2019 and continued in 2020, in order to determine our carbon footprint. From the first phase of the analysis, a 30% reduction target in total greenhouse gases (GHGs) for Scopes 1 and 2 was implemented as a sustainability target. In 2021, phase two, consisting of a baseline GHG analysis for scope 3, was launched with the aim of developing a target by the first quarter of 2022.

Founding member of two global initiatives in collaboration with the Arbor Day Foundation: Evergreen Alliance and Time for Trees Initiative; and is a member of the Trillion Tree Initiative.

Become a signatory to two crucial causes for the protection of the waterways of our world: the CEO Water Mandate and the principles of the sustainable ocean of the United Nations Global Compact.

Empowerment of women

Became an actor in the action coalition’s commitment to four action coalitions for generational equality: gender-based violence; Justice and economic rights; Feminist action for climate justice; and Technology and innovation for gender equality (2021-2026)

Launch of the Women’s Entrepreneurship Accelerator in 2019, a global initiative to promote entrepreneurship through education and empower women entrepreneurs through four empowerment pathways: education, finance, advocacy and participation, serving as an entrepreneurship accelerator for all women, everywhere.

Supported the United Nations Global Compact to develop a Toolkit for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) for the Women’s Empowerment Principles of UN Women to its 6,000 SME members and general use by businesses around the world to support women’s equality.

Global social impact and local community

The Mary Kay Ash Foundation had nearly 40 innovative cancer research and clinical trial projects and researchers in its pipeline; 42% of innovative cancer research projects are led by women, while 100% of clinical trials are led by women.

Mary Kay Inc. and the Mary Kay Ash Foundation have supported 667 organizations engaged in the work of rescuing organizations that advocate for the eradication of gender-based violence and the funding of women’s shelters providing essential support services, reaching over 2 million women and girls thanks to 786 unique projects in more than 138 different countries.

Since 2008, Mary Kay’s global Pink Changing Lives empowerment program has reached over six million women and their families by partnering with more than 3,000 organizations around the world, donating more than $ 16 million.
