LEAWOOD, Kan. & DENVER – (COMMERCIAL THREAD) – A multi-year partnership announced today between Tallgrass Energy and Project Canary would make the Tallgrass Rockies Express Pipeline (REX) the first interstate natural gas transmission pipeline in the United States to receive a full environmental assessment and certification and independent of Project Canary. Certification standards will focus on environmental stewardship, operational excellence, and real-time emission detection and monitoring.

Highlights of the agreement:

  • REX will seek operational and emissions certification through an independent third party Project Canary

  • REX will be the first pipeline to implement real-time emissions detection and monitoring at all of its compressor stations

  • REX will be the first pipeline to differentiate carbon neutral transmission capacity for its customers through its large footprint, enabling the continued evolution of certified carbon neutral gas services across the country.

  • The long-term goals of the partnership will enable the midstream sector to certify carbon neutral gas transport capacity and enable end-to-end certification and monitoring of gas molecules, including responsible and renewable natural gas. to markets seeking new low carbon targets.

  • The commitment will enable the creation of a standardized certification process for the pipeline transport and storage segments

  • Colorado School of Mines to partner with Project Canary to review and validate data

“This one-of-a-kind commitment underscores the critical importance of natural gas transmission systems in the energy transition,” said Tallgrass President Matthew (Matt) Sheehy. “Customers want the assurance that natural gas is produced responsibly and transported through low-emission piping systems. This agreement with Project Canary validates Tallgrass’s commitment to be a leader in sustainability and will allow REX to measure, manage and mitigate its direct emissions, paving the way for a sustainable future for interstate pipelines by enabling them , ultimately, to achieve clear goals. zero emissions.

REX is one of the largest natural gas collector systems in the country, with a total capacity of over 4.4 Bcf / d. As a two-way pipeline, REX provides access to Midwestern markets from major production basins in the Rockies and Appalachians. To validate the environmental stewardship and operational excellence criteria of the agreement, Project Canary will install real-time monitoring devices to measure and quantify emissions at REX’s 22 compressor stations, covering more than 1,700 miles. As a result, REX will devote specific capacity to transporting certified, responsibly sourced gas from producers in Appalachia to markets in the Midwest.

“Real-time detection of fugitive methane emissions throughout the natural gas supply chain is the only way for the industry to really know and improve what is going on in its operations and to help mitigate climate change, ”said Chris Romer, CEO and co-founder of Project Canary. . “A differentiated market has emerged, promoting the transport and production of certified gas from responsible sources. With their commitment to independent certification and real-time emissions monitoring on a leading interstate natural gas transmission network, Tallgrass is raising the standard of environmental excellence in its industry.

The Project Canary Midstream certification process is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2021 and end by mid-2022. REX plans to engage shippers, end users of natural gas and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in discussions to address the benefits of its differentiated level of service.

Project Canary, a leading provider of granular science and engineering-based ESG data and analysis – and independent certification programs for the energy sector – will quantify emissions data, track progress and certify the operational and environmental performance of Tallgrass. The Payne Institute at the Colorado School of Mines will partner with Project Canary to assess and review the data during the process.
