The Irish National Teachers’ Organization and some nursery operators have expressed concern over changes to the close contact rules for children.

From Monday, children under 12 will no longer have to be tested or stay at home if they are asymptomatic close contacts of a Covid case at school.

The automatic contact search will also be interrupted for them.

INTO said it was shocked at the speed of the decision to allow unvaccinated children linked to a confirmed case in their classroom to continue to attend school.

The union, along with some nursery operators, believe it is too early to make this decision and have urged the government to reconsider the matter.

Otherwise, he warned, a high infection rate could force schools to close longer mid-October.

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said recent data shows that schools are a low-risk environment for transmission of Covid.
